Things To Do

Mount Somers is in a fantastic location to cater for everyone's idea of leisure. You can relax in our hammock and read a book, or take part in one of the many activities that are on our doorstep.

In less than an hour you can be tramping one of New Zealand's Great Walks on the Mount Somers walkway, visiting historical sights and Lord of the Rings locations, skiing on Mt Hutt, jet boating the Rakaia river, fishing in arguably the best salmon fishing river in New Zealand, ballooning or helicoptering over the Canterbury Plains, or relaxing on the beach past Ashburton.

Mount Somers is also home to the Mineral to Arts biennial festival, a fantastic week of sculpturing, workshops, arts, crafts, food stalls and entertainment.

We are always happy to promote things to do in the Mt Somers area and can organise any activity that you would like to do. Here are some activities to keep you occupied during your stay at Stronechrubie. If you see anything you like, let us know and we can make the arrangements for you.
Discover the stunning Mt Somers and Canterbury Highcountry - ecotours, tramping, hiking, bush walking, fishing and Lord of the Rings film locations make this a must-see destination!
The Mt Somers & High Country region is the gateway to an area which is one of the top ecotourism locations in Canterbury. Mountains, lakes, rare and endangered birds, vast landscapes, rainforest, waterfall, mountain streams and braided rivers.

The outdoor activities are just as diverse - tramping & hiking, bush walking, high country garden tours, mountain biking, fishing, windsurfing, historic sites, bird watching, ice skating & curling.
There are 3 stunning golf courses close by - Mayfield, Methven and Terrace Downs.

Within a short drive from Mt Somers you will find yourself surrounded by a series of delightful lakes famous for their fishing, unique wildlife, picnic spots and water activities.

Popular more physically demanding activities occur in the Mt Somers Conservation Area. These range from short bush walks to the popular two-days tramps - The Mt Somers Subalpine Walkway and the more demanding round-the-mountain Mt Somers Track.
